The Arrogant Carney’s Alternative Facts
in which Carney behaves like Trump by invoking “fake news” when pressed by the corporate media for transparency
Today in Brampton Canadians caught another example of Carney’s contempt for the media, and disdain for transparency. Today we caught another glimpse into Carney’s arrogance and frankly, his hostility. Today we caught another whiff of Carney’s penchant for dodging the truth in favour of Trudeau-esque denial.
Reader, when I look at or think of Mark Carney, I hear Richard Nixon’s voice inside my head saying I am not a crook.
Back to the Brampton presser. Reader, it wasn’t pretty. For context and background, you can begin with this (gift linked) article from the Globe and Mail — Liberal candidate Peter Yuen, chosen to replace Paul Chiang, linked to pro-Beijing groups, events. You can check out Steven Chase on X and his response to Carney’s “fake news” accusations, if you’re the type who goes on X.
During the Liberal leadership race, Mr. Carney met with the executives of the J[Jiangsu International Chamber of Commerce in Canada], according to its website, which described the former central banker’s entry into politics as “an important turning point in the upgrading of China-Canada relations.” — Robert Fife and Steven Chase, Globe and Mail, 10.4.2025
“I’ve never heard of this group … I certainly didn’t have a set-up meeting with this group.” — Mark Carney in response to a question from a Globe and Mail reporter at the Brampton press briefing this morning.
Reader. Sigh. Reader, really? Do you see what I see in the photograph below?

Reader, it’s weird Carney has never heard of the Jiangsu International Chamber of Commerce in Canada (JCCC), because they’ve heard of him! You see the bloke to the left of Carney’s? That’s Rui Jiang, president of the JCCC, he’s in tight with the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and the United Front Work Department.
What’s the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, you ask?

Moving on.
From our friend, FiT, in an article dated April of 2023, we have this interesting bit of open source intelligence, an excerpt from a reply letter, (dated April 2020), to Lou Qinjian (娄勤俭), the secretary of the Jiangsu Provincial Committee of the Chinese Communist Party; and Wu Zhenglong (吴政隆), Governor of Jiangsu Provincial People's Government.
“Under your kind concern and the call of the Jiangsu provincial government, the United Front Work Department (UFWD) of the provincial party committee, the provincial Overseas Chinese Affairs Office (OCAO), the Jiangsu Overseas Friendship Association, and other departments have extended their caring hands.
Among them, the provincial Overseas Chinese Association and the JCCC …”
Reader, at the top of the list of signatories of this reply letter we have: Rui Jiang, Michael Chan1 (currently Deputy Mayor of Markham, Chan served as a Liberal MPP in Ontario from 2007 to 2018, and held several cabinet posts including Minister of Trade, Minister of Citizenship & Immigration, Minister of Revenue, Chan also was involved in fundraising for the Liberal Party and was known as kingmaker), and Victor Oh, who served as a Canadian senator from 2013 until his mandatory retirement in 2024).

Reader, note Mr. Jiang’s credentials. Reader, note Mr. Jiang’s affiliations — with Jiangsu Overseas Friendship Association and also with the CPPCC. Information accessed on a state-affiliated media2 website describes the Jiangsu Overseas Friendship Association as the United Front Department of the Jiangsu Provincial Party Committee. Reader, typically the phrase ‘overseas friendship association’ refers to a United Front Work Department (UFWD) affiliated group. In June of 2020 the Ministry of Public Safety issued a note about the UFWD, stating the following.
China is making fresh efforts to influence Chinese communities around the world to advance Beijing’s interests, requiring heightened vigilance from democratic countries. Beijing uses the UFWD to stifle criticism, infiltrate foreign political parties, diaspora communities, universities and multinational corporations. The UFWD’s importance to the Chinese Communist Party has grown in recent years under President Xi, as 40,000 new staff have been added. — NSCB/PS, 9.6.20203

the most fundamental thing is to adhere to the leadership of the [Chinese Communist] Party
The UFWD's Ninth Bureau runs the China Overseas Friendship Association (COFA).
Per the Australia Strategic Policy Initiative Policy Brief 32 from 2020, here’s a list of “key united front groups and events linked to foreign interference”
The Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference is the peak united front forum, bringing together CCP officials and Chinese elites.
The China Overseas Friendship Association is a group run by the UFWD that recently subsumed the China Overseas Exchange Association.
The China Council for the Promotion of Peaceful National Reunification is an organ of the UFWD with numerous overseas branches.
The All-China Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese is a peak united front body for ethnic Chinese with overseas links.
The Western Returned Scholars Association is the UFWD's primary body for interacting with ethnic Chinese scholars and scientists.
The Forum on the Global Chinese Language Media is a biennial meeting of overseas Chinese-language media outlets convened by the UFWD.
Chinese students and scholars associations are overseen by Ministry of Education officials and often seek to speak for, influence and monitor Chinese students abroad.
Local equivalents, such as the provincial Guangdong Overseas Friendship Association, exist for most major united front groups.

“The key to the effectiveness of the united front led by the Party lies in whether it is really managed. Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, the Party Central Committee, with Comrade Xi Jinping as the core, has adhered to the comprehensive and strict governance of the Party, “dare to face problems head-on, dare to scrape the bones to cure poison4”, removed many factors that undermine the Party's advancedness and purity, removed many factors that erode the Party's healthy muscles, and put “the Party's political leadership, ideological leadership”, The “mass organization and social appeal” have been raised to a new height, creating a new premise for the Party to lead the united front.” — China-Tibet News, 2017
In October of last year, The National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference published the following statement, entitled China Overseas Friendship Association urged to help unite patriotic forces, “ … Shi, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and head of the United Front Work Department of the CPC Central Committee, acknowledged the work of the COFA in uniting patriotic forces from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and overseas, as well as playing an active role in supporting economic and social development, expanding connections, building a strong force against separatism, and promoting cultural exchanges.”
So, reader, I’ve loaded you with enough information to surmise the degree of PRC foreign interference in Canadian politics and in the present 45th general election. I’ve given you a crash course on the United Front, tried to explained its structure, function, purpose, and reach. to get an idea of the degree of infiltration in Canada, you can look at this list of pro-CCP groups in Canada from 6 years ago. Now, reader, let’s return to the statement that began this story, the reason I wrote this article. This morning Mark Carney looked at the G&M reporter and said in a steely and hostile tone of voice,“I’ve never heard of this group … I certainly didn’t have a set-up meeting with this group.” Below you can see a photo of Mark Carney with Rui Jiang, at an in-depth meeting the JCCC.
“I’m a politician. I go to events where there are hundreds and 1000s, you know, 1000s, over the course of a day, of different people there. That is not a meeting. If somebody happens to be in the room (and) takes a picture with me, that’s not a meeting, okay?” — Mark Carney, speaking to reporters this morning in Brampton
Sure, Mr. Carney, sure. However, the JCCC indicated you had an in-depth meeting with them. That’s more than a photo op, sir. Could Mr. Carney please tell the truth, and could he stop treating the media like his enemy?
What more can I say?
Only this — don’t believe everything Mark Carney tells you, check your sources, or consult others who diligently check sources as part of the work they do:

Readers might remember that Ms Astravas seemed to have concerns about the Van Weenan list, ie who might be on that list and subject to surveillance due to their contact with Mr. Chan. Readers might remember that a CSIS warrant typically takes 10 days for approval, not 54 days.
