And the violent crime spree in Canada continues, unchecked. Gladue is not your friend, Canada. Impact of Race and Culture Assessment (IRCAs) is not your friend, Canada. This race-based approach to criminal justice defies democratic principles. Not to mention the catch and release policy. Not to mention the progressivism and deinstitutionalisation that’s dismantled desperately needed mental health care.
We are super progressive in Canada, who needs institutional care for the dangerous deranged and violent? Not us! (Sarcasm).

On Friday October 10th, Vancouver Police Department (VPD) and emergency crews responded to a violent stabbing spree in Yaletown, on the seawall, near David Lam Park. Emergency crews located three victims with non life threatening injuries and took them to hospital for treatment. As of Tuesday, the number of victims had risen to 7–five men and two women, ranging in age from 23 to 59 years of age. After an intense hunt that took place over the weekend and involved an appeal to the public for help, the VPD have the suspect in custody. Initial evidence suggests the attacks were random and unprovoked, report the VPD.
The VPD didn’t released the identity of the 35 year old suspect when it announced the arrest. I can’t help but think in my cynical way that they’d have no trouble identifying a white dude who stabbed 7 people in Yaletown. Oh did I say that out loud, reader. Shhhh.
Update: About an hour and a half ago, Bob Mackin posted the name of the woman.
A search in the BC Court Services Online reveals the following information.
Court abbreviation interpretation
CCC-266 Assault — refers to Section 266 of Canada’s Criminal Code, which defines the crime of assault.
JIR — refers to Judicial Interim Release, the legal term for “bail”
IBJ — means initiated by Judge
NB: As far as I can see, Ms Hamelin remains in custody at least until her next scheduled court date on Friday.
According to the VPD, violent crime in Vancouver has risen from 5820 in 2019 incidents to 6256 incidents in 2023, that’s an increase of 7.5%. Assaults have risen by 8.3% and sexually offences rose by 12.6%. The VPD tells us we have the lowest crime rate in 20 years. Though according to the Fraser Institute, Toronto and Vancouver have higher property crime rate than New York and Los Angeles. Based on the graph above, from the Fraser Institute report, it doesn’t look like violent crime in BC has changed much from 20 years ago.
Around midday the VPD released a statement about a homicide that took place in Strathcona on September 30th.
Vancouver Police have identified the victim of a September 30 homicide in Strathconaas 48-year-old Norman Labonte.
Labonte was shot and killed near Main and Union Street just after 7 a.m. on September 30.
The investigation is ongoing. No charges have been laid.
Everything is fine, though, reader.
It’s okay, because Sean Fraser, Federal Justice Minister, says it’s not the Wild West in Canada.
So Canadian readers, don’t worry be happy.
