Rupa Subramanya and Ruth Marshall and Salma Zahid
in which those who question the intentions of western hijabis receive verbal abuse and shunning
Ruth Marshall, professor at U of T Department of Religion said this about Rupa Subramanya because Rupa questioned Salma Zahid’s support for hijab.
“Rupa is a human stain, a vile, bigoted, hateful waste of human skin. Everyone should shun her for the rest of her life.
Salma is wearing a headscarf because she has cancer. Let's pray for her swift recovery as we block this evil bitch.”
Fun Fact Check: Salma Zahid has been cancer free for 7 years. Salma Zahid does not currently have cancer.
The background story: Salma Zahid announced her medical leave from parliament due to Stage 4 Hodgkins Lymphoma in February 2018. Whilst receiving chemo Ms Zahid began wearing hijab and became the first MP to wear hijab in the House of Commons. Zahid chose to wear hijab as a chemo kirchief, not as a commitment to g-d to begin an intentional religious modesty practise. In July 2018, after completing six rounds of chemotherapy, Zahid announced her cancer free status. She continued to wear hijab as a political identity symbol, and she supports Islamist hijab culture.
To Repeat. Salma Zahid has been cancer free for 7 years. Salma Zahid does not currently have cancer.
Who is Ruth Marshall? You can learn about her here. Ruth Marshall is an Associate Professor with the University of Toronto Department for the Study of Religion.
Reader!!!! WTF? This is how U of T professors behave? Department of Religion, no less. Wow. Shocking and disappointing, isn’t it?
Ms Zahid supports World Hijab Day, saying “It's a day of education, and of solidarity with women and girls that choose to wear the hijab every day.”
Ms Zahid does not support NoHijabDay, she does not support WomanLifeFreedom, she does not support Muslim girls and women who CHOOSE AGAINST HIJAB. She has not publicly supported the women of Iran who reject forced hijab and face persecution and torture and abuse from the Islamic Republic and its modesty police and security forces state for “bad hijab”.
Ms Zahid supported Sara Jama wearing the keffiyeh on the Ontario legislature. The keffiyeh is a political symbol not a religious one. Legislatures in Canada have rules governing what elected representatives can wear in the chamber. These rules forbid political symbols like the keffiyeh. Sara Jama is a woman who espouses virulent antisemitism and who supports Hamas activism. Hamas operates a terrorist dictatorship in Gaza, it oppresses and abuses and tortures and murders Palestinians.
On April 25, 2024, posted the following message in response to the tweet shown above.
“As a Mother, my heart breaks for the young pages watching this happen. It breaks for the young women watching. People need to see people like them in public life. They need to see they belong. They matter. Can be themselves. This sends the opposite message.”
Reader, the keffiyeh sends a message to non Muslims, in particular to Jews. Do you know what that is? Does Ms Zahid know?
Let’s review some of Ms Zahid’s support for World Hijab Day, which a western Muslim woman started to promote the hijab as an identity for Muslim women in the west.
From World Hijab Day 2022. Ms Zahid shares a Global News article on Xwitter, underscoring the narrative, “We’re not oppressed.” Ms Zahid posts this video.
From World Hijab Day 2023. On Xwitter Ms Zahid posts four photos of western notable Muslim women who wear hijab and tags ICNA Sisters Canada. She writes the following message. “Today is WorldHijabDay. On this day, I stand in solidarity with all Muslim women who make the free choice to wear the hijab. Everyone's story and journey is different. I stand with you whatever choice you make.”
Fun fact check: ICNA is a radical Islamist and Muslim Brotherhood organisation. Bahrain, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have designated Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist organisation.
From World Hijab Day 2024. Ms Zahid posts a video and writes the following message. “A message for WorldHijabDay: In a time of rising Islamophobia, I hope World Hijab Day can be a day for conversation and dialogue.”
Fun fact check: “Islamophobia” is a Muslim think tank invention designed to shut down criticism of Islam. Source: Abdur-Rahman Muhammad.
Fun fact check: The Ayatollah Khomeini invented forced hijab on March 7, 1979, after the Iranian Revolution facilitated his rise to power. Iranian women vehemently protested, prior to the revolution, forced hijab didn’t exist in Iran or anywhere in the Middle East. Even Nasser himself laughed at the idea of Muslim Brotherhood demands for forced hijab, in a now-famous speech.
What is Hijab? What is not Hijab?
Fun fact check: Hijab is a religious practise not a cancer kerchief. Hijab is not a kerchief to cover your bald head when chemo takes your hair—that’s vanity masquerading as modesty. The concept of Hijab involves guarding against a woman’s vanity by covering her hair. Hijab means making a commitment to g-d to cover your hair, the crowning glory of a woman.
“… the rules of women's hijab are stricter than those of men's hijab. Of course men should also observe hijab in some cases, but Islamic rules are stricter in the case of women's hijab. That is because the delicate nature of women and their characteristics are considered the embodiment of delicacy and beauty in the world. And if we want to prevent our society from being plunged into corruption and turmoil, we should keep women in hijab.” — Ayatollah Ali Khamenei
Reader, Ms Zahid says she supports a woman’s right to choose hijab. A choice entails freedom to do the thing and a freedom to reject doing the thing. Remember G-d gave humans FREE WILL to choose Him or not choose Him. Does Ms Zahid support a woman’s right to REJECT hijab? Why doesn’t Ms Zahid stand up for Iranian girls and women fighting forced hijab?
Reader, look at these photos below.

Mahsa Amini was murdered by the Islamic Republic of Iran for bad hijab. The IRGC beat her to death for her choice to wear her hair uncovered.
The Islamic Republic security forces prevent Mahsa Amini’s parents from visiting Mahsa’s grave.
What do you think of the Ayatollah surrounding himself with a sea of little girls dressed in the full length khimar?
Do you think that’s modest for a religious holy leader to behave that way with members of the opposite sex? Especially young girls? Do you think these little girls choose to wear this religious costume they’re wearing in this photo? When they see how older girls and women are beaten and killed by powerful men do you think these little girls really make a choice to dress in full-length khimar?
Reader, I do not think these little girls do make a free choice to wear hijab, to wear these full-length khimars they’re wearing.
I’ll restate it because it’s vitally important — G-d must be a choice made freely, not by force and pain of death. There’s no “freedom in hijab” as long as any girl or woman on the planet is forced to wear hijab.
Let’s recap.
Hijab is not a chemo scarf.
Hijab is not an identity.
Hijab is not a social prop.
Hijab is a religious modesty practise.
Hijab is a serious commitment to G-d.
Modesty means not being seen, it means fitting in. A beanie will do just fine to cover your hair in most settings. Modesty means we don’t celebrate our choice not to be seen—then it’s not modesty, is it?
Reader, it’s truly deranged to use religious modesty for self glorification. Truly disturbed and exploitive. It mocks pious and sincere modesty practise.
Ruth Marshall, Associate Professor of Religion at University of Toronto, needs to learn manners and she needs to learn about Free Will and she needs to learn about religious modesty practises. She behaved disgracefully. Her behaviour demonstrates poor character, and possibility a degree of emotional disturbance.
As a journalist, it’s Rupa’s job to question things like Salma Zahid’s use of hijab to engage in political posturing. It’s a reasonable question she asked. Ezra Levant himself raised the same question several years ago. We are allowed to ask questions of politicians, there’s nothing “evil” about what Rupa wrote in her Xwitter posts about Salma Zahid’s hijab. It’s fair game. The totalitarian attitude of progressives has become menacing and it invites abuse. Dissenting women seem at particular risk of progressive abuse. It leads me to question why. Don’t worry reader, I think I know the answer to my question.
